my Spiderman client

I have this client, who  was admitted for depression. He has a trauma history on top of the depression, and he has been thinking about it more frequently. he let me in what happened all those years ago, and I know it sounded familiar...
He was held up at knifepoint while in a convenience store. He has a permit to use a concealed weapon, but didn't shoot the attacker. He didn't get into it and it's not my place to pry at this time.  The attacker fled and client was unhurt.  The following week, the attacker wound up attacking and killing another person, a landlord in a local apartment building.  my client has been guilt-ridden for years about it, and questioned whether there was something he could do to "make things right."   I think he oculd benefit from hearing [info]mabfan 's lecture on Spiderman and redemption.

Hm. I wonder if he's ever read any Spider-Man comics? That might help him in some odd way, as long as he reads the right ones.

Once or twice on Making Light, I've seen the issue of civilians with concealed weapons coming up. The consensus from the people on that blog with actual military experience seemed to be that while it looks good in the movies for someone to heroically face down the bad guys with deadly force, it's usually a bad idea in practice. (In particular, it can be easy for another Good Guy to mistake you for a Bad Guy, and if that someone else is also armed, then they may treat you accordingly.) So your client's decision not to draw a weapon may in fact have been the right decision to make at that time, even if it led to bad consequences later.

(Of course, neuroses--if I may use that archaic term--have their own logic, and I understand that the objective facts may have nothing to do with the psychological aftereffects that this guy now has to unwind.)

Wow... that's a tough position to be in.
